60 Minutes on last Sunday featured Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer in one segment, and several at the pool on Monday talked about it. The report seemed to give Shake Shack a good review on their fare, so several of us decided to go try them. There are three stores in the Valley, one in the shopping center at Camelback and Central and two in Scottsdale. We went to the first one tonight. Elaine and I brought Pete Petersen and Agnes Volk; Dale and Betty Stroh were there as were Bill Russell and Marty House and Bill’s sister Kay and Larry Hale. My first impression was negative: WAY TOO LOUD and the seats are very hard to sit on.
I ordered the Smoke Shack (Cheeseburger topped with all-natural applewood smoked bacon, chopped cherry pepper, ShackSauce). Elaine had the Shack Burger (Cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato, ShackSauce). Pete had the ‘Shroom Burger (Crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with melted muenster and cheddar cheeses, topped with lettuce, tomato, ShackSauce). Pete at first was not going to go, having checked the reviews and found they only averaged three stars, but when he saw the menu online and saw they have the portobello mushroom burger (no meat) he changed his mind. He said afterwards he liked the ‘Shroom Burger, and Elaine thought her Shack Burger was okay. I was not favorably impressed with the Smoke Shack; too many different competing flavors that got all mushed together. I did like the potato bun, though. Elaine said the fries were not really good; not cut from potato but like frozen crinkle fries. I also ordered a Chocolate and Peanut Butter Concrete (dense chocolate frozen custard ice cream blended at high speed with chocolate and peanut butter mix-ins) and it was delicious.
On the way out I picked up a Pooch-ini for the boys (ShackBurger® dog biscuits, peanut butter sauce and vanilla custard). They loved it and gobbled it up when we got home!
We did a few more things outside on our decorations, but I did not get photos today. We’ll be doing some more tomorrow, I am sure.
I worked at my desk this afternoon, clearing away some accumulated things and paying bills that had stacked up the last week or so; I got our property taxes paid for the year, for example, and paid some residual medical amounts our insurance had not covered. My desk tends to get cluttered during the couple of weeks while I am working on the monthly newsletter and then I have to clear it up once that is done. I am a little late this month doing this due to the hernia surgery right after the newsletter came out. Since I was on a roll, I did not go to the pool this afternoon.
