Part show, part great food, and part great company. That was our dinner at Sapporo tonight with Shauna and Casey Dockter. We had shared this with them the last time we were here, and looked forward to doing it again. Sapporo is a Japanese restaurant with your meal cooked in front of you on a large hibachi with lots of flair. These young chefs are trained to entertain, and that they do. We shared a Sapporo Special For Two – 8 oz filet mignon, 5 oz lobster tail, 8 pcs shrimp, 7 oz chicken. And we brought home about ¾ of each meal for leftovers! They will be yum. We were awakened around 2:00 this morning by a sudden burst of very strong wind against OurHous. This kept up for a long time, and it soon started raining. Elaine said this kept her partially awake for a couple of hours, but I went back to sleep again. When I got up the temp was around 48° but it kept dropping until by around 10:00 it was down to 38°. I had our rooftop electric heat going all night, but this morning I had to switch to gas heat; the rooftop heat pump units will not produce heat when the outside temp drops below the mid-40s. The wind let up this morning but was back with a vengeance around 10:00 or so and continued most of the day off and on. Continue reading It started out miserable, but got better.
We are back at one of our frequent stops – the Rock Springs-Green River KOA– in Rock Springs WY. This is the city from which Elaine and I moved to Phoenix in 2000. We have family here: Elaine’s sister, Jo Behrman; son Shane Ogden and his wife, Johnna; son John Ogden; and daughter Shauna Ogden Dockter and her husband Casey. So we come back often to visit with family. But this area was Elaine’s home for almost all of her life from around age 6 to 2000, and I lived here from around 1979 through 2000 except for when we lived in Lewiston ME from around 1986-1990. Up to our ears in trash would have been a good term to use. It had been WAY TOO LONG since I hauled to the recycle bins and today was the day to get it done. Royal Palm Social Club does recycling of aluminum, cardboard, paper, and #1 and #2 plastics. The recycle basket under the kitchen sink had been overflowing for a week or more, there was a collection of cardboard boxed on the deck, and the area around my recycle cans behind the deck was, to turn a phrase, trashy. I started with the cardboard boxes, knocking them down flat, and loading them in the golf cart. There was enough to make a whole load of that, so Elaine and the boys and I headed off to the bins. We are at the current end of the new Valley Metro light rail line, and that is bringing a lot of new people into our area. Many hang out at the new Quik Trip station/convenience store next door. And many transients are camping along the canal behind the property. As a result residents in Royal Palm have become concerned, though we haven’t seen any rise in crime in our community yet. So President George Immerso set up contacts with the City of Phoenix Police Department’s team that interacts with neighborhoods and Officer C J Young came to us tonight to help us get started with a Block Watch program. Tonight was the second karaoke session of the month and the continuation of the Royal Palm Voice contest. Early in the year about ten or so contestants started out, with each singing a song in the competition. Each month one contestant was eliminated, and in this month three remain. Each time a tip jar was passed around for contributions, and the final winner will take home the pot. I have to say that the three contestants who sang tonight did an excellent job, and it has become increasingly difficult to choose among them. Continue reading Social Club meeting. Karaoke. We’ve been hearing from Pete Petersen about Jason’s Deli but had never yet been to one until tonight. Rather than go to Pei Wei as we have been lately, we decided to do something different. Jason’s Deli has mostly sandwiches, though they have a copious salad bar and a few dishes. The typical order for a Muffaletta is a quarter sandwich, for the Muffaletta roll is about nine inches in diameter. But I decided to order a whole one, knowing I would have plenty of leftovers (three quarters of the sandwich) for the rest of the week. Elaine went to the salad bar, and she had leftovers as well. Abuelo’s offers great Tex-Mex cuisine. We ate there tonight with Nancy and Bill Schuling; it is one of their favorite places and they used to live in that part of Peoria so ate there in the past. I took Elaine there for lunch a few weeks ago and we have been wanting to return for a supper meal. It didn’t take much to convince Bill and Nancy to join us; we just had to wait for an opportunity when Bill was off duty so we could do it. It has been a while since we ate at a US Egg restaurant, so I thought it was time to go this morning. While there are several around us, I chose the one on Greenway Parkway and 7th Street – we’ve been to this one before. I had my favorite there – the Protein Waffle, with sausage. This is filled with Wild Maine Blueberries, granola, cinnamon, and slivered almonds. Elaine had the Italy Omelet; Italian sausage and freshly sliced mushrooms, topped off with marinara sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. He omelet was huge, and stuffed with great flavor.
