Iron Works – all you can eat fish fry. Making final arrangements. Funny Gizmo.

fish fry
Here’s the group from Royal Palm at the Iron Works restaurant

Wayne Moderson suggested to Bill Russell and others a trip to IronWorks restaurant at Bellair Golf Course near 45th Ave and W Bell Road. Wayne has been there many times and suggested the Friday night All You Can Eat Fish Fry. Others latched onto the idea when it was raised at the pool earlier this week and twelve of us headed there tonight. It was well worth going for! The fish was excellent – it was Alaskan Pollock. I had the fish and Elaine had their Chicken Fried Chicken, which was a huge meal with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Continue reading Iron Works – all you can eat fish fry. Gizmo cutie. New batteries.

Gizmo on lap
Sometimes Gizmo will lay on my lap, but is more likely to be found on Elaine’s

I had a piece on Kerby a few days ago, so thought I would give Gizmo a turn today. Unlike Kerby, Gizmo is not camera-shy and will usually let me take his photo. However, he is easily distracted by anything that sounds like food or a package being opened so if you want him to stay for a photo you make sure not to have those noises going on. Gizmo loves being close to us and to sit in a lap or beside us in our recliners. He snuggles in close between us and the arm of our chair. But he can often be found curled up on the couch or in the dog bed on the floor. Continue reading Gizmo cutie. New batteries.

Kerby, relaxed. Monsoon weather.

Kerby in dog bed
Now that is relaxed! Kerby in his dog bed

Kerby is a pretty laid-back sort of fellow most of the time. You will often see him laying back beside the couch near Elaine’s chair or on the floor under the bar chairs behind my chair. Sometimes he will be laying on the floor under the window beside my chair or on the rug in front of the couch. We keep a dog bed on the living room floor near the office door, and Gizmo will often use this but Kerby uses it more often. In fact, that is where he usually sleeps at night. But today I just had to take the photo at right, showing Kerby in a very relaxed mode. Continue reading Kerby, relaxed. Monsoon weather.

Kerby posed. Battery change. More on motorhome values.

Kerby posed
I got Kerby to hold still long enough to get his photo. Doesn’t happen very often.

Over the years Kerby’s behavior has slightly changed, as he gets older. He used to be very lively and we could get him to play with ease, but as he gets older he has slowed down a lot and now can’t be teased into romping. When a visitor comes Kerby will go over to them and greet them; if the visitor sits on the couch Kerby will go sit at the person’s feet and enjoys being petted. But he can’t jump onto the couch as Gizmo does. One behavior is that he does not like to have his photo taken. Usually if he sees me get my phone camera out he turns around or will head for another room. So I felt fortunate this morning when he sat still so I could get the photo at right. New temporary bridge. Father’s Day was great. 118 today.

new bridge
I have a new temporary bridge on top in front

Back to Aspen Dental this morning to have the previous temporary bridge removed, things cleaned up, more fine tuning done on the posts, and a new temporary bridge installed. The previous one was installed a month ago and I had to wait while the gums healed from having three teeth removed in preparation for the new bridge. All healed well, and I got the new temporary today. In two weeks I’ll get the permanent one. The previous one broke a week ago, so this last week I have had no teeth in the front on my upper jaw. Check out my photo at right – see, I know how to do selfies! Continue reading New temporary bridge. Father’s Day was great. 118 today.

Back yard awning. Card class. Potluck.

awning in place
This is the first step: the awning structure is in place

Marv Fitchett worked today installing our back yard awning. This awning is about 4 ft wide by 20 ft long and covers the back porch and back to the rear of the house. The idea is to keep rain off the porch and to some extent off the dogs’ outside area. It will also provide some shade except in late afternoons in the summer. We have fenced the area off so far using the portable foldable dog fence we used during our RVing years, but Marv will be installing a 4 ft high lattice fence in the new system. Outstanding House. 24PetWatch. Shed light switch.

outstanding
Our house was selected as the Outstanding House Of The Month here in Royal Palm

Our house was selected as Outstanding House Of The Month in Royal Palm for June. This was the second time we were selected; the first was after our remodeling and repainting a year or so ago. We are proud to be so designated. We have put a lot of work into making our house more attractive, and would enjoy the result even without this honor. You can see the sign in our front yard all this month.

Having updated the licenses for Kerby and Gizmo, today I updated the info at 24PetWatch.com – where their microchips are registered. The last address on file was our Texas mailing address and Gizmo’s info was not complete and there was no photo for him. While I was at it, I updated Kerby’s photo as well.

I added a z-wave light switch to operate the ceiling lights in the shed today. Or rather, I should say that Marv Fitchett did the wiring for me. This replaces the regular switch that has been there all along. The GE 12722 In-Wall Smart Switch connects nicely in our Nexia system. While it works locally by pushing the paddle on the switch, with a z-wave connection I can also operate the light from my smartphone, tablet, or computer. I also set up two buttons on the button panel by the front door to turn the light on and off as well.

Elaine did some major shopping at Winco and at 99ยข Only Store today. Part of it was shopping for the Royal Palm Rescue Pantry, part was for our own stores. Pete Petersen is an avid shopper at both places but has no car of his own, so he went along with her. I wish I could, but the Winco store is so large I cannot walk that far so Elaine has to handle it.

New deadbolt, finally. Garden flags. Fire extinguishers. Refrigerator cleaning. Dentist. Dog licenses.

deadbolt
Our new deadbolt for the shed door

I recently wrote about changing the deadbolt on the shed door; I had installed a Schlage BE365NX model. But when I started setting it up I realized it would not work the way I wanted. I wanted to be able to unlock the deadbolt remotely from the house and lock it the same way. I did some further research and found out that the model BE469NX would do that. Too bad this was not discussed either at the Nexia web site or at Schlage’s. I ordered the BE469NX and installed it today. It works great – we can lock/unlock it using a key or using the keypad at the lock. We can also lock/unlock it using the Nexia app on smartphone, tablet, or computer. Go for a walk. Bridge down, temporarily repaired. Pretty posies. Painting posts.

time for a walk
Kerby and Gizmo loudly telling me it is time for a walk

Twice a day the boys and I get to go for a walk. In the morning I usually wait until they tell me it is time to go; it is usually Kerby who first goes and stand by the front door, looking at me. Gizmo soon joins him. In the evening I often initiate the walk process as part of our schedule just before dinner. But tonight I waited until after dinner. Gizmo was sitting with Elaine on her recliner and Kerby was on the floor between us when Elaine asked about our w-a-l-k, spelling it out. She commented that it would not be long before they understood the spelling and, sure enough, Gizmo hopped down and went over near Kerby. I looked at them and spoke the walk word and you can see the result in the photo! Continue reading Go for a walk. Bridge down, temporarily repaired. Pretty posies. Painting posts.

Slick Gizmo after grooming

Danielle is back in business, and Kerby and Gizmo are now clean and groomed. We have been taking them to Danielle at the Pet Club store at 19th Ave and W Northern, but a couple of weeks ago the store suddenly shut down. Danielle had no notice; she showed up for work on Apr 14th only to find the store being emptied! She scrambled to find another place and was able to. But at this new location she can only do grooming; they want her to be able to do more groomings a day and they have others to do the washing. So for a few of her older customers she will take them at her home, and that is where we went today. We are happy for her and for our boys, because they love Danielle.
