Rain

detention basin
There was water still in the Royal Palm detention basin this afternoon from last night’s storm

I mentioned in last night’s story that we expected rain. And the rain came. We got ¾ inch here in Royal Palm. There were puddles everywhere this morning, including on the floorboards of our golf cart. We had moved it in under our patio awning last night but the wind blew so hard from the west that the golf cart still got soaked. The reported amounts varied from ¼ inch in downtown Phoenix and further south to over an inch north of us. The storm lasted for a couple of hours or more and was accompanied  by thunder and lightning for some of the time. We left our front door open for much of the storm so we could enjoy the sound of the rain hitting the patio awning. It’s a rare enough experience! Continue reading Rain. Snow. Shopping.

More rope lights

more rope lights
I added the rope lights on the deck railings today plus some added ornaments hanging from the edge of the awning

The second and third set of rope lights came in today, so I installed them this afternoon. One rope extends from the rope on the planter boxes, wraps around the top rail on front of the deck and the stair railing, and ends on the rail post. The other starts at the stairs end of the top rail along the main part of the deck and wraps its way as far as it will go. Both ropes are 24-foot with violet LED lights. They are sold by Lamplust on Amazon. I discovered after receiving the first rope that you can join together up to seven of these ropes. This would give you about 170 feet of lights. Elaine better. Shopping, shopping, shopping. Purple lights, red lights.

As proof that Elaine is feeling better, we went shopping this morning at Trader Joe’s and Costco and this afternoon at Winco! Each of those stores has things that we buy there rather than other places, including our regular grocery shopping store – Fry’s. Pete Petersen went with us to take advantage of the transportation and to share in the shopping. Elaine made it through the morning quite well, but took a short nap after lunch. And then she handled the afternoon shopping as well. That was good news! Continue reading Elaine better. Shopping, shopping, shopping. Purple lights, red lights.

Posting to Craigslist. Elaine update. Warm and dry.

Iris Smart Kit
Lowe’s Iris Smart Kit home monitoring and automation starter kit

I have started posting some items for sale on Craigslist; these are the “high-ticket” items that did not sell in the yard sale over the weekend. I have only a little experience with using Craigslist. I had advertised some items last year but the only response was from a scammer and I cut that off quickly. A couple of items are things I had bought for the house but never used. One is an Iris Smart Kit – a home automation and monitoring package. I bought this but before it got installed we replaced our HVAC system and the new system came with a Nexia bridge built into the thermostat, so I didn’t need the Iris system. Price new $299; I am asking $125. Here’s a link to the listing. Continue reading Posting to Craigslist. Elaine update. Warm and dry.

Sweet Tomatoes. Hashtags. Making blog tweeter. Yard sale prep.

Once more out to dinner – this time to Sweet Tomatoes. We joined Larry and Kay Hale, Bill Russell, and Pete Petersen there; it is the Hales’ last night in Phoenix as they are headed home to Michigan tomorrow. We will miss them! We had never met Larry and Kay before, but have come to enjoy them very much in the few weeks they have been here. #SweetTomatoes was good; Elaine and I have not been there for a couple of years, though we have liked it in the past. They have a great salad bar, good bakery selections, and lots of dessert choices. Pete and Bill go there often enough that the staff at checkout know them by name! Continue reading Sweet Tomatoes. Taco Tuesday at Beaver Bar. Craft Tuesday. Shopping. More yard sale items.

at Beaver Bar
A gang of 18 from Royal Palm at The Beaver Bar tonight

There were eighteen of us from Royal Palm at The Beaver Bar tonight! This is the third Tuesday in a row that a group of us have gone, and the group has gotten larger each week. The Beaver Bar is not normally staffed to handle such a crowd so this week someone called in advance to let Mike Beaver know about how many were coming, and they had our tables all rearranged for us when we got there. And Mike had made sure he had enough staff to handle the load. Other than our group, there were only about 6-8 people there tonight. Part of the draw is their 99¢ Taco Tuesdays. Shed addition. Women’s Club. A visit to Chase Bank. Shopping at JoAnn’s, Hi-Health, and Fry’s.

shed addition
The addition to the rear of our shed has been finished

Marv finished his work on our shed addition today. It is now painted to match our existing shed and our house, and fits in quite well. Now it is my turn; I have to add the storage shelving inside as well as the padlocks for the doors. I am looking forward to getting those tasks done so we can start sorting out the plastic tubs now stored in the middle of the shed itself. That is mostly stuff from our motorhome, and we need to go through it to determine what to keep and what to get rid of. Royal Palm Social Club will hold a community yard sale on November 11th, and we want to have stuff ready to sell then. Continue reading Shed addition. Women’s Club. A visit to Chase Bank. Christmas dinner planning. Costco. Shed addition.

Marv and shed addition
Marv working on the shed addition

Marv Fitchett was back at work on our shed addition today, and is making good progress. The roof panels are in place as is some of the siding, and he added two of the three doors today. At this point you can get an idea of what the space will look like, and I think it will provide a good amount of added room for storage. Continue reading Christmas dinner planning. Costco. Busy day. Neighbor update.

Interior at Kiss The Cook
The interior at Kiss The Cook is kitschy-cute

“Every meal served with a kiss!” That’s the motto at Kiss The Cook (KTC), a favorite restaurant on W Glendale Ave in Glendale and where we went for breakfast this morning. The kiss, of course, is a Hershey’s Kiss placed on your bill at the end of the meal. The decor at KTC is eclectic, with mostly kitschy antiques and household items. We ate inside, but they also have outside seating. On Saturdays you should plan to get there by 7:45 AM at the latest, for it gets quite busy after 8:00! Continue reading Busy day. Neighbor update.

Rescuing dying plants. More shopping.

new plants
Elaine put some new plants in the gap left when some of the previous died.

Last weekend Elaine bought some plants to put in the planters in front to replace some that had died. I had planned to have Andy do the planting but he would not be able to do it until the end of next week so tonight Elaine dug in (so to speak) and did the planting herself. As it was, one small flat of plants did not survive the wait. But now our planter boxes look more full again, with the holes filled. Great job, Elaine! Continue reading Rescuing dying plants.
