Bringing together a large and diverse community requires collaboration across many teams. At Psychedelic Science conferences, volunteers have support nearly every aspect of the attendee experience, including registration, hospitality, event navigation, speaker coordination, communications, and behind-the-scenes operations. Volunteers help welcome thousands of attendees, prepare conference materials, connect guests with resources, and support the people and programs that make the event possible. Some responsibilities involve direct interaction with attendees, while others focus on preparation, coordination, and operational support. Each role contributes to the larger conference experience.
The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1986 by Dr. Rick Doblin. MAPS works to advance research, education, and cultural understanding surrounding the careful uses of psychedelics and marijuana, including their potential roles in mental health and well-being. Over the decades, MAPS has contributed to research, education, and advocacy efforts aimed at expanding public understanding of psychedelic substances and supporting evidence-informed approaches to their use.
We believe the volunteer experience begins long before the first conference attendee walks through the doors. It's built through the relationships we develop, the care we extend to one another, and our shared commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment. We encourage you to participate in this space with curiosity, kindness, and an openness to learning from others. Whether you're here to gain experience, connect with people in the field, support MAPS' mission, or contribute to something meaningful, we're glad you're exploring this opportunity.
One of the most meaningful parts of the Psychedelic Science experience is the opportunity to connect with people who share an interest in research, education, community, and the future of psychedelic science. We hope this Violette community provides opportunities to begin building those connections before the conference. Whether you're looking to meet fellow prospective volunteers, ask questions, exchange travel ideas, or simply learn more about the experience, you're in the right place.
While different roles may call for different skills, our previous volunteer programs have emphasized a few shared qualities: Empathic Presence Approaching others with compassion, curiosity, and a willingness to listen without judgment. Collaboration Working alongside fellow volunteers, staff, and conference partners to support shared goals. Adaptability Remaining flexible and open to learning as the needs of a large event evolve. Respect & Inclusion Honoring different backgrounds, identities, experiences, and perspectives. Communication Asking questions, sharing information responsibly, and knowing when to seek additional support.
